Thailand has prepared facilities in provinces bordering Myanmar to accommodate a possible influx of refugees, fleeing the brutal crackdown by the Myanmar military and police following the recent coup.

Thailand’s Army Commander-in-Chief General Narongphan Chitkaewtae visited security units in Mae Hong Son and Tak provinces today, to inspect their readiness to cope refugees from the worsening situation in the neighbouring country.

Seven areas in Mae Sot, Tha Song Yang, Mae Ramat and Phob Phra districts have been set aside as refugee camps.

Four facilities in Kanchanaburi province, which shares a common border with Myanmar at the Three Pagoda Pass, can accommodate up to 2,000 refugees.

Harsh crackdowns on protests by the junta in Myanmar a have been reported in border townships, such as Thachilek and Myawaddi, opposite Thailand’s Mae Sai and Mae Sot districts.
