Under a new three-tier system, English cities will be subject to lockdown measures corresponding with the severity of covid-19 outbreaks in their areas

More could have been done if countries had worked together to fight the coronavirus, the secretary general of the UN has said, as he warned more than 100 million people could be forced into poverty and hunger due to a lack of international “unity”.

It comes as a further 150 people died after contracting the virus in the UK, along with an additional 16,171 new cases reported in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, more than half of England – 28 million people – has been placed under heightened coronavirus restrictions.

UK reports 150 deaths within 24 hours, as cases rise by over 16,000

An additional 16,171 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in the space of 24 hours, the government has confirmed – bringing the total nationwide tally to 705,428.

Department of Health and Social Care figures added that a further 150 people have died after contracting the virus as of Saturday, making up a total of 43,579 fatalities.

Jeremy Corbyn’s brother joined revellers and protesters in central London on Friday as police were forced to break up big groups breaking new lockdown rules, and hours before the capital entered the “high” Tier 2 category.

Large crowds gathered around bars and restaurants in Soho last night after the 10pm closing time as officers were forced to break-up the groups not adhering to social distancing guidelines.

Netherlands reports new record for daily cases

The Netherlands hit a new record for daily coronavirus cases, with more than 8,000 infections in the past 24 hours, data released on Saturday showed.

The number of confirmed cases climbed 8,114, according to daily figures compiled by the National Institute for Public Health (RIVM).

Wales nears 35,000 cases

There have been a further 674 cases of Covid-19 diagnosed in Wales, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 34,679.

Public Health Wales said five further deaths had been reported, with the total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic rising to 1,708.

Fears of coronavirus outbreak after asylum seeker catches Covid at ‘unsanitary’ barracks

An asylum seeker who is one of 400 currently being housed at a former army barracks is reported to have contracted coronavirus after repeated complaints about unsanitary conditions.

Charity workers helping out at Napier Barracks near Folkestone, in Kent, now fear a mass outbreak amid the crowded conditions there.

England hospital deaths increase by 86

A further 86 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 30,910, NHS England said on Saturday.

Patients were aged between 44 and 99. All but two patients, aged 62 and 79, had known underlying health conditions.

The deaths were between 16 September and 16 October.

Three other deaths were reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.

Austria reports record number of daily infections

Austria has reported 1,747 coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, a new record for the country.

The daily count this month has repeatedly exceeded the peak of 1,050 reached in March during the first wave of infections.
