During the exercise, the Chinese destroyers, Kunming, Xianning and Liuzhou, practiced all-time and all-dimensional offense and defence training exercises, including the air-sea-defence, main gun firing and formation adjustment in fast-changing battlefield scenarios.

The exercise took place amid ongoing tensions in the region, days after U.S. president Joe Biden concluded his trip to South Korea and Japan. During the trip, Biden participated in a Quad summit, with Japan, India and Australia, in Tokyo and launched the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF). The agreement was signed by Japan, India, South Korea, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, New Zealand and Brunei.
