Powerful Earthquake Buries Homes, Kills at Least 2 Perople
Two people have been killed by a powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake on Japan’s Hokkaido island that triggered massive landslides that buried homes. Japan’s Meteorological Agency said the epicenter of the quake, which struck at a depth of 40 kilometers, was located just east of the city of Tomakomai. Power was knocked out to Hokkaido’s nearly 3 million households. National broadcaster NHK says 140 people have been injured and nearly 40 are believed missing amid the destruction. At a news conference, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters that authorities have received hundreds of calls about people missing and buildings collapsing. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said about 25,000 self-defense troops are being sent to Hokkaido, with several thousand planning to help in search-and-rescue missions.
