“Lepang”, a 2.8-metre-long male crocodile which was caught near Lepang beach in Phuket’s Thalang district in September will be kept at the Phuket zoo because it is a hybrid species. The decision to keep the Lepang crocodile at Phuket zoo was made at a meeting on Friday (Nov 17) of the Fisheries Department and relevant agencies, including Kasetsart and Mahildol universities and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation. Fisheries Department chief Adisorn Promthep said DNA tests showed that Lepang crocodile was a hybrid species of fresh-water and salt-water crocodiles and, therefore, could not be released into the wild. He said that the private zoo was a more appropriate place to keep the crocodile because the state has no space to keep the reptile.
