4 confirmed dead and 3 missing in spillway breach in Myanmar

Four people died and three others, including a boy, went missing after runoffs from a collapsed dam spillway on Swar Creek in Taungoo district in Bago region swept into four townships, The Irrawaddy News reported on Friday. Spokesman of the Bago region government office said that four bodies – including a pregnant woman, a 17-year old teenager and two male adults – were found in Swar township where the runoffs first flooded.  The missing persons are an 11-year old boy, the driver of a truck and an army major from an infantry battalion. Water from the dam on Swar creek has been flowing across the land and into Sittaung river since Wednesday after the dam breached, causing flooding in four townships. 23 villages in the four townships have been affected by flooding and the government has been providing help to those affected in 85 temporary relief camps to accommodate more than 31,000 flood victims. Bago Region’s Minister of Natural Resources, Forestry and Environmental Conservation U Saw Nyo Win said rehabilitation of the affected villagers would take time....
